Calculate cents per point honestly

Use the cash cost you would actually pay and include the award’s unavoidable charges.

The basic formula

Cents per point = (comparable cash price − cash charges on the award) ÷ points required × 100. All cash inputs must use the same currency and cover the same travelers or nights.

Illustrative example: ($650 − $50) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 1.50 cents per point. If you compare with an acceptable $500 alternative instead, the practical result is 1.125 cents.

Improve the calculation

Subtract additional costs caused by the award and the value of rewards forgone by not booking with cash. Use only differences that are genuinely relevant; a taxi required for either booking should not be charged solely against the award.

A willingness-to-pay cap is a useful second check. If a luxury suite sells for $2,000 but you would pay at most $500 for your stay, a calculation based only on the suite’s retail price overstates personal savings.

Know the units

One cent is $0.01. A valuation of 1.5 cents per point means 100,000 points have an illustrative planning value of $1,500, not $150,000. Hotel currencies and bank currencies can have different practical uses, so compare converted source points where a transfer is involved.

A benchmark is a preference

Our calculator calls a result above, near or below the benchmark you choose. It is not an objective market rating. The preset benchmarks are editable planning examples, not official redemption values or a guarantee that you can get that return.

Use the tool to compare choices. Do not spend more or accept an inconvenient trip just to produce a larger value per point. A lower value that saves money on the trip you actually need may be the better redemption.

Put it into practice.

Compare a realistic cash fare with an award, including fees and the value you give up.

Compare a booking

Examples are planning scenarios, not live awards or personalized financial recommendations. Recheck official terms before applying, booking or transferring. How we work
