Search a trip, not a headline deal
Choose your acceptable dates, nearby airports and cabin. Search the actual program that will issue the award. Alaska’s Atmos award charts can help frame a search, while Delta publishes several redemption options; neither removes the need to confirm your exact itinerary and charges.
Value time and risk
A lower mileage price can require a connection, a different airport or a separate positioning ticket. Add those cash costs and consider the disruption risk. Separate tickets can complicate recovery when the first flight is late.
Make mixed-cabin itineraries explicit. A short first-class connection does not make an overnight economy segment a premium-cabin redemption.
Worked example
Illustrative options: $700 nonstop; 40,000 points plus $60 nonstop; or 30,000 points plus $180 and a connection. At a personal 1.3-cent value, the award economic costs are $580 and $570 respectively. The $10 difference may not justify a connection.
The simple cents-per-point result is still useful, but it is only one lens. Compare the itinerary you would choose with cash and the restrictions attached to each award.
Protect the booking sequence
- Confirm seats for the whole party before transferring.
- Read partner ticketing, change and cancellation terms.
- Verify all taxes, carrier surcharges and booking fees.
- Do not assume a transfer bonus means award prices are discounted.
- Keep confirmations and recheck schedule changes before departure.
